Vendor Follow-up: Interview with "The Dragon Lady" (Dragon NaturallySpeaking / JR Consulting)

In arranging for the Dr. Thomas Rohrick interviewI had the pleasure of speaking with the reseller of the software, Ms. Judy Richard. We were able to converse in our mutually native language, Minnesotan. Please note that most of our "you bets", "you knows", "whatevers" and "yah sures" have been deleted or translated for your reading convenience.

While working for an insurance agency, Judy was asked to take a word processing course. The instructor made her feel so stupid, she never went to the 3rd class and felt awful about it. She swore that if she ever became a computer instructor, never would she make a student feel so inferior and helpless.


Six years ago, she left a 20-year career as a computer instructor and mortgaged her house to start a new business, JR Consulting, selling Dragon NaturallySpeaking voice recognition and EHR patient charting software to medical/chiropractic clinics, lawyers, and other professionals upon whom the burden of document creation most often falls. Some might consider that risky, but Judy simply states, “I love this product. It’s a life-changer.”

Judy Richard is often called “The Dragon Lady” by her customers and crew. She is the CEO of JR Consulting in Minnetonka, MN, a successful reseller of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical/Legal voice recognition software. Recently approved to conduct CME classes on medical documentation, Judy is now a certified “computer guru” for doctors who wish to earn CME credit for their software training.

Doesn't every vendor love their own product? Yes, but sometimes, a person is so well-suited to a certain product, they almost become the product. Speaking with Judy is very natural. Her “voice recognition” is very accurate. Judy Richard has become enchanted by the Dragon, and believe me, the condition is contagious. I almost forgot that I already own the product, so compelling is her affinity for the Dragon's magic. I was ready to buy it all over again!

 

Judy told me, “I fell in love with Dragon NaurallySpeaking when I first saw it six years ago, and I knew that I could sell it. I get a thrill out of helping people, and Dragon helps people so much. It’s been wonderful for me. Did I tell you that all of my clients are entitled to free telephone tech support for life?”

 

As a user of Dragon NatuallySpeaking Medical Edition, a lazy one, who hasn't cracked open the manual, I tapped into a small portion of Judy’s knowledge, vital information I missed by not reading “the book”. She knows the Dragon NaturallySpeaking program like no one else.

 

Yet, Judy believes in very brief training sessions, no more than an hour or two.  (A brain is a terrible thing to fry.) She gives every client her own  "cheat sheet" of the most useful tips and commands. I warned her that some of our readers might want a copy. She said, "Just ask them to call me if they want one. Who knows? They might even need an update."

 

Like many great sales representatives, Judy is also a great storyteller, and you just can’t beat some of those hilarious "Dragon-error" stories. Did you know that the Medical edition of Dragon Naturally Speaking has been known to interpret “you’re in trouble” as “urine trouble”? (As a writer, I sometimes get interesting ideas from Dragon "errors". If the error is better than what I had in mind, I'll go with the error and call it a random act of creativity.)

 

If you have never been enchanted by the Dragon, I highly recommend a chat with the Dragon Lady. And if you’re not quite ready to believe in a magic product or a Dragon Lady, that’s OK. Judy provides her clients with free tech support for life, which she assures me, is plenty of time to become a believer.

 

As a reseller and teacher of Dragon NaturallySpeaking and other software, Judy has an authentic passion for helping others understand, appreciate, and utilize the full power of this software. She has also redefined for me the meaning of the word "dedication".
