The myth of HIPAA Privacy according to Dr. Yasnoff

Just as the P in HIPAA does not stand for privacy, the HIPAA Privacy Rule actually eliminates privacy protection in a way that prevents violations from being detected, monitored or audited.

Very critical how EHR and HIPAA mix it up privacy-wise, must read this.

Another fight for standards: human genome and family history

As one of the first humans to have my genome sequenced, I'm passionate about the standards used to record genomic and family history data.

Interesting point of view, how can we arrange the gene and family history data in such a way as to make it a meaningful, interoperable endeavor?

Techguy blogs about choosing the right microphone for DNS 10 Medical

Thanks to Eric over at Speech Recognition I've gotten some interesting information about a microphone called the PowerMic II. Looks like it's a microphone on steroids. Definitely one other microphone to consider when selecting a microphone to use with voice recognition software.

This topic has it's own forum here, Medical Voice Recognition.

Helping Physicians Adopt EMRs In Ohio

COLUMBUS, OH - The Ohio State Medical Association, representing 20,000 Ohio physicians, residents, medical students and practice managers, says its Standards of Excellence Program has helped save time and money in adopting electronic medical records.

EMR vendors should always talk with local medical associations to see how they can work together, if in no other way, than in EMR education.

For a Diabetic's Thanksgiving Feast, Skip the Honey

I'm getting hungry already, but seriously, a great collection of blood glucose favorites from the Mayo Clinic for your patients and yourselves

Health Insurance Industry Ready To Cooperate With Universal Coverage

The health insurance industry said Wednesday it will support a national health care overhaul that requires them to accept all customers, regardless of pre-existing medical conditions - but in return it wants lawmakers to mandate that everyone buy coverage.

Getting closer each day, do you still think it can never happen here?

Fast Food Ads Add To Childhood Obesity

"Our results indicate that a ban on these advertisements would reduce the number of overweight children ages 3-11 in a fixed population by 18 percent and would reduce the number of overweight adolescents ages 12-18 by 14 percent."

Several countries are mentioned where fast-food ads are banned, but a kid and his or her money are soon parted by hunger for fast food, fast.

Living 4 months without any heart, teen transplant patient describes the feeling

As she was being released Wednesday from a Miami hospital, the shy teen seemed in awe of what she's endured. Since July, she's had two heart transplants and survived with artificial heart pumps - but no heart - for four months between the transplants.

She says she did not feel like a real person while no heart beat in her chest.

Virtual human computer model will help drug development

The two-year "Biotic Man" project, funded with $1.1 million under a DoD contract, will advance an application that Niskayuna, N.Y.-based GE Global Research previously developed. The existing Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic software, called PBPK, uses computational models to measure a drug's response in the body long before clinical trials begin.

Sounds like the beginning of a great new video game, can't wait to hear more about this DOD project.

CCHIT wants to know how you feel about them expanding

The Chicago-based commission is soliciting ideas for adding new certification efforts for health care information technology. During December, a form will be available on the group's Web site, cchit.org, for submitting comments. Users of the form can provide information on the benefits of expanding certification into a new area, the readiness of that area for certification and an estimate of the effort required to develop certification in that area.

Al, this is your big chance to tell CCHIT exactly what you think they should do, and as we all know, you are the world leader of their fan club. Not.

Indiana HIE Expands Services Into Patient Health Notifications

The Indiana Health Information Exchange has launched its Quality Health First disease management and preventive health services notification program. The QHF program uses claims data and other information from insurers and other sources to send reminders to physicians about patients due for preventive health screenings.

Health alerts sent to doctors about chronically ill patients as a matter of state policy? We are getting more social in our approach to medicine every place we look.

Retinal Prosthesis To Partially Restore Vision To The Blind

Second Sight® Medical Products, Inc., the leading developer of retinal prostheses for the blind, announced that it will increase patient enrollment for the ArgusTM II Retinal Implant study throughout clinical trials sites within Europe.

I just read a sci-fi story in Analog about a retinal transplant which did strange things with the Internet, any Analog readers out there?
