Fred Trotter defines the hospital EHR

What happens when you specifically define an EHR in terms of functionality? You find out that almost no one has one.

Everyone is talking about the "bad news" that was just released at AHIC. But most industry insiders have know that deep adoption of EHR technology is laughable. What is interesting about the results above is how they defined an EHR, and how reasonable that definition is!

Great article from the champion of open source, Mr. Fred Trotter.

EHRs could save $30 Billion per year

"Healthcare is a human concern that touches all of us," Lazenby said. "Every dollar spent on unnecessary administration is a dollar that cannot be spent on preventive care or covering an uninsured family. Think what we could do with $30 billion every year." http://emdeon.mediaroom.com/index... and http://www.ushealthcareindex.com

Brief but powerful quote above is not out of line, IF we are talking overall adoption.

Cancer takes the lead by 2010 as the top killer disease

Rising tobacco use in developing countries is believed to be a huge reason for the shift, particularly in China and India, where 40 percent of the world's smokers now live.

This tobacco use is growing fast, although not in the U.S.A. where we are learning to just say no to smoking, how much do we supply the world, I wonder.

Alternative medicine growing in popularity in the U.S.

Back pain was the leading reason that Americans reported using complementary and alternative medicine techniques, followed by neck and joint pain as well as arthritis, according to the survey by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I have never tried these methods, although I do think they have value.

Specialists give U.S. emergency care a grade of C-

"The findings of the 2009 report card are sobering," the report authors said. "The emergency care system in the United States remains in serious condition, with numerous states facing critical problems."  Of the individual states, Massachusetts scored the highest overall with a B, followed by the District of Columbia, Rhode Island, Maryland and Nebraska. The lowest-scoring state was Arkansas, with a D-minus. Oklahoma, New Mexico, Nevada, and Oregon were also at the bottom of the list.

No state received a grade of A, meaning standards are very high.
