HL-7 publishes their own set of standards for PHR

International healthcare IT standards body Health Level Seven (HL7), has published the Personal Health Record System Functional Model (PHR-S FM) as a draft standard for trial use.

Compatible with Google and MS PHRs? Probably not.

Medicare Limbo: 24 months of waiting for healthcare

After reviewing their cases, the government declared McClain and Frederick too sick to work and started issuing them monthly Social Security disability checks. Then they found out they'd have to wait two years to get health care through Medicare. Even though workers and their employers pay the payroll taxes that fund Medicare, federal law requires disabled workers to wait 24-months before they can begin receiving benefits. McClain and Frederick are far from alone. An estimated 1.8 million disabled workers are languishing in Medicare limbo at any given time. And about one out of eight dies waiting.

Another reason our so-called system needs an overhaul.

Overuse of pain meds for migraine can cause chronic migraines

"It was a double-edged sword," Cerbone, 41, of Montclair, N.J., says of a period when only one pain reliever dulled her migraines and then invariably triggered rebound headaches a day or so later. "I was taking Fiorinal on a daily basis just to function."  The caution is timely, as the estimated 30 million Americans who suffer migraines - migraineurs, they're called - often find the holiday season a time of increased pain. Lack of sleep, tempting treats and the stress of travel are common triggers.

I hope you all have a mellow, pain-free holiday! And have some fun, too!

$5 gift card for anyone who donates blood on Christmas Eve

"With the observance of the Christmas and New Year's holidays, we need to make up the nearly 2,000 units of blood typically collected on two weekdays. So in recognition of their taking time to help others by coming to donate blood on Christmas Eve, we're offering all presenting donors a $5 gift card," he said.

They really know how to get blood in Pittsburgh, don't they?

½ of surveyed adults say they do not intend to get flu shot

Many people who really need the vaccine like the elderly, who are most likely to die from flu should try to get it. But the rest of us? The vaccine, at best, is 75 percent effective. And last year's batch was even less effective because experts incorrectly predicted which flu strain would hit the United States. In fact, several of the kids who died from the flu last year had been vaccinated.

Another article stated that the current flu shot is so great, a healthy adult can get by on ½ the dose.

FDA approves new oral sleep-aid spray, Zolpimist

NovaDel states that oral sprays may work faster than tablets and "eliminate the requirement for water or for the need to swallow, potentially improving patient convenience and adherence," and that Zolpimist is "bioequivalent" to Ambien tablets.

Now we are getting somewhere in patient convenience, just spray your problems away. Nice.

On average, you will gain one pound this holiday season

A recent study says that the average holiday weight gain for Americans is 1 pound. But there are ways you can avoid that all together. Here's some surprisingly easy ways to enjoy the season without expanding your waist line.

May all of you eat well this holiday season, and enjoy gaining that one little pound, it looks good on you.
