Hum... Interesting questions. How do I know if the speech buffer is filling up? I don't have Dragon set to save my speech data, so I don't think it's that. It does seems to be losing it's USB connection, yet the USB device is still present in the device manager, and unplugging the device and plugging it back in doesn't seem to help. There is no tone like when a usb device is unplugged when the microphone issue happens. And unplugging and plugging the USB soundcard back in doesn't seem to do squat - a complete computer restart is required. It has me completely lost and frustrated. Has happened daily for the past two days.
I also don't know the answer to the network packet continuously question, except that it's a medical office with 28 computers, so I'm sure the answer is yes.
But thanks for trying to troubleshoot.
>>yet the USB device is still present in the device manager<<
I assume it is there without a yellow or red exclamation point. Refresh and check again when in DM. It may disappear with refresh. Go into the propertied of the device and and see what it says is working properly. How may USB devices and or USB hubs are attached to this machine? If a hub is it powered? If it is USB, you may even have want to tweak how your BIOS handles USB. I have a similar problem where my usb mouse decides to freeze (actually it is the usb infra red reciever) when I turn on a printer. Of course I have half a dozen USB appliances attached. Thank God I don't have a second story window in my office!

I am not sure I could tell if there is a way to know if the speech buffer is filling up. What I would look at is how much RAM do you have? For Dragon version 9.5 medical, I would think 2 GB of RAM should be the minimum. If you can get the RAM increased to that or more it may solve your problem.
The way we troubleshoot whether it networked packet overload is the problem is to simply disconnect from the network by disconnecting the network cable. In some situations this may not really be practical. However, you may want to ask your IT person if it is something they could work with you on.

This problem is discussed on several other websites, and apparently it isn't rare. But I have not found a solution. I have looked at the Dragon log and can see the errors, but I don't know what they mean. Does anyone here know how to interpret that? Here's a curiosity. In the past couple of weeks I have had this problem on Thursday but not on Friday (including today, so far). I am in two different cities on those two days (same laptop). Could it be something local (radio station interference or something) or day-related? My laptop has been set to do automatic backups on Wednesday (a day it is turned off all day) and when I start it on Thursday it gives me a message that the scheduled backup wasn't done, do I want to do it now? I always say no, but I wonder if that automatic background software could be having some kind of conflict (I disabled it today so we'll see what happens next week).
Another interesting thing: I never had this happen with my old Philips SpeechMike (it broke, unfortunately), which included both the voice and playback through the same USB. I am now using a Sennheiser ME3, which is just a microphone - the playback is through the onboard sound card and laptop speakers. Could there be a conflict occurring because of that?
Has anyone submitted this to Nuance support? I probably will if I can't figure it out, but I wonder if it will be useful.
BTW, I have a ThinkPad T61, XP Pro, Sennheiser ME3 with the AndreaUSB pod.

You can save your Dragonlog as a plain text file and e-mail it to us as an attachment and we will have a look at it. Our e-mail address is DNS Log Support. There may be a way to attach your log file to postings on this excellent forum but we haven't found it yet. If you would like other speech recognition experts to take a look in your log file you might consider posting this question on the worlds most popular dedicated Speech Recognition Forums.
We doubt this is a RAM problem and you can always increase your “Buffer” by increasing the Disk space reserved for playback to something like 200 Mb but unless you specifically need the capability of saving your wav file information with your document, we highly recommend changing your Save recorded dictation with document option to Never which could exacerbate the problem. You'll find both of these settings under the NaturallySpeaking Options/Data Tab.
Note: If we see something interesting in your Dragonlog, we can forward it to Nuance, whom we work for.
