There is no reason for Microsoft to purchase NaturallySpeaking because Microsoft treats VSR (Vista speech engine) like it was a Windows accessory by giving it away. It would not make financial sen$e to purchase something you're going to give away and there might additionally be a monopoly problem. We also think the Vista speech engine is quite good but having used NaturallySpeaking Pro 10 for nearly a month now, we have to say that DNS 10 is considerably more accurate. Of course, you certainly can't beat the price of VSR.

My remarks here and above are for the sake of argument only. However, in the back of my mind I can see some real business logic.

Vista VR does not even work in my EMR! If fails to recognize a single word in my EMR but works fine in notepad.

probably more a function of the controls used by the EMR that you are dictating into than Vista.  Microsoft has a speech API and multiple controls that allow an EMR full functionality with speech.  If your interested in speech in the EMR you should contact your vendor and see if it's a simple fix.  sometimes it's simply turning a switch on in the code.

i know in some testing i've done and with other companies there are things about Vista that just work and they didn't in Dragon.  Take it up with the EMR vendor, i'm sure they will see it as a positive to make Vista speech work in the EMR.

I'm thinking this might be the same issue as DNS 10 with EMRs? I't not allowed?

Heh, that's a good one.   Considering speech is a feature of the OS i don't think that's the case!

The decision by Nuance about the EMR's is just a reflection of the management and how out of touch they are with the market.

The problem is also easily remedied. See the latest reddybiggs and KnowBrainer postings towards the end of the http://www.emrupdate.com/forums/t/16066.aspx?PageIndex=7 thread.

Linus,

What problem? Are you referring to my problem with Vista VR not working in my EMR? Who was it that said MS owns part of Nuance? Could they be correct and could this be part of the issue?

I've been using Vista beta for 4-5 years, although not continually with VR. Anyway, this is new to me. The only reason I tested this was because I have a Quad 4 machine with 4 gigs or Ram and was curious. Because of Nuance licensing issues, I can't have DNS on this machine, unless I UNINSTALL on another machine. Who needs Vegas, when you can install on one machine and hope it works on the other?

That's the problem we were referring to and Reddy Biggs last posting really drives the point home.

Because of Nuance licensing issues, I can't have DNS on this machine, unless I UNINSTALL on another machine.

Whoever gave you that advice is dead wrong. Nuance has NEVER had this type of licensing in place. NaturallySpeaking is licensed to you, not the computer; like most Microsoft products. NaturallySpeaking includes 10 activations and although the manufacturer doesn't really intend for you to install the software on 10 different machines, it could be done. Nuance basically figures that everyone has up to 3 computers and they plan on you installing it on all of them. This information comes directly from the horse’s mouth because we are Nuance Gold Certified/Licensed partners.

>>NaturallySpeaking includes 10 activations <<

Lunis,

That is certainly not the case with PaperPort, another Nuance product.

I'm guessing those 10 activations require an uninstall. With respect to DNS here is a quote from the Nuance site: "If the same version of the software is reinstalled on the same machine or is not concurrently installed on any other machine, no new license is required. Additional licenses are generally required for installations above and beyond those allowed by the product's EULA." I'm quite certain the EULA stipulates one license per user. I guess I could go back and read my EULA. As I recall, someone from Nuance, maybe Jeffrey Segarra, posted on this very site that Nuance licenses were ostensibly, limited to one.

Good luck FINDING the EULA for Dragon 10. I kept EVERYTHING, even the shipping envelope. There was no EULA printed. I had already installed the software, and NOWHERE in the software could I find a EULA.

My solution?  Re-install, and then cut and paste the EULA from the install screen.

Literally, that was the ONLY place I could find it.

As far as installations, there doesn't appear to be a limit in the EULA, but only ONE user per license.

"An individual Licensee is permitted to create and use multiple User Profiles under this License.  User Profiles can be stored on one machine or on a server to allow the speaker to move from machine to machine and still maintain a consistent dictation experience across machines.  A separate license, however, must be purchased for each additional speaker whose User Profile or User Profiles is or are being used by the Software.  Licensee may authorize a third party to use the Software in connection with any of Licensee’s User Profiles solely for the purpose of performing editing or correcting functions for Licensee; however, such third party must purchase a separate License to create his or her own User Profile."

Nuance generally expects that you will install NaturallySpeaking on around 3 computers (simultaneously) and no one is going to give you any grief about it. As far as Eula’s in general are concerned… much of what you find in many software end-user licensing agreements would never hold up in court.
