One more question.  You said you almost signed three years ago.  What stopped you?

A half of million dollars with no customer base demanding this functionality.  That is why this new Web Version or other licensing methods are of interest to me again.  Will review as I said, since customer demand has not been high for DSS's.

Does anyone know if the Medcin alternative under development by Kirby was ever completed?  Also, can anyone tell me if the CliniTalk thing I saw at HIMSS has anything to do with it?

Clinitalk is a product under development by both Medicomp and Phillips. It will be available in future revisions of the Medcin engine.

Medicapaedia is an open source alternative to Medcin - similar in some regards, very different data model in other regards.  You can search for discussions on it in this forum.

DrWinn:

that's stretching the definition of open source somewhat, since as far as I know, it has not been released and nor does anyone outside of emds have access to it.

When the editor is finished, it will be released to the general public.  It is taking too durn long to get out.  Maybe our developers should make the editor open source so we can get it out sooner..... hint, hint.

I do not think it is a pure Open Source model - by strict definition.  It will be "free" (no royalty) for anyone who wants to use it, BUT they will have to agree to contribute any improvements they make to the full data model AND there will be some kind of 'vetting' process to verify the legitimacy of any added (contributed) data before it becomes part of the permanent data model.  Also, we will insist that people do not create derivative proprietary data suprasets to market and sell - products yes, but not data extensions - assuming that can be accomplished with the Open Source license.

The editor has to be finsihed soon or we will not have enough time to build a rich data set prior to release of our web based EMR.

The idea of open sourcing it is to shorten the development!  Many hands make light work ... and not too many cooks spoil the broth
