BTW, I am running Quickbooks 2006 on Vista. We only upgrade QB every 3 years now; the upgrades offer minimal additional features, have a cost of learning about the changes, and the expense is almost as much as buying the program new.

I am running QB V6 .. and after clicking on "Run" trust this publisher etc... nothing happens
I see that one person has got it running under Linux/wine .. so maybe I'll have to do that.
My wife uses QB Pro 2008 on a Vista Toshiba laptop.
Right mouse button and run executables as admin. I've learned to do this on all my first time executables with Vista. If you do this, I find it even less intrusive than my Imac which requires a password.
I learned the hard way, installing many applications from a server over the network, only to find minutes later that security forbids me from continuing.
You can also emulate older versions of windows in the properties of executables that don't work. I had to do this to get a music program to work that my wife is taking in a local college. Needless to say, the professor was very grateful for a workaround for hundreds of students using new computers with Vista.

One of the first things I tried ... no go.
I'm going to create a VM and put XP on it.

Have you tried telling Vista that you are running an XP machine (properties of .exe). Remember this is Intuit. Intuit never could master a floppy backup that does not corrupt with repeated backups.
I copied the install files to my hard drive and tried this as well ... the installer just won't run.
Is your Vista machine a 64-bit machine?
JamesNT
64 bit processor running 32 bit Vista.
Have you tried hightlighting the setup executable, going to properties, compatability and telling the setup that this is a XP machine?
Yes, that's why I had to copy the install files to my hard drive as I could not alter the properties while it was on the cd!
The reason your program will not install is because the installer has 16-bit code in it. A good indication of this is when the intaller asks you for where you want to install your program, the entry looks like this:
c:\progr~\insta~\path
In other words, you see the tildes denoting inability to read long files names.
Many 32-bt programs still use their old 16-bit installers because the original maker of the software is to pathetic to update the installer.
It is impossible to run 16-bit code on a 64-bit computer.
Well, I have Quickbooks running again, but now in a Windows 2000 VM on my Vista laptop.
I've got a bit of catching up to do invoice wise now
I did try the Quickbooks online version but it was just too slow despite all the Ajax.

Are you using the free Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 download, or a different product?
I have been interested in loading a Vista unit with various OS as a test of the product.
What's your opinion so far of your VM?Reddy
