Has anyone used this software, RemoteScan?

Essentially it turns your USB Fujitsu into a networked device accessable to every computer with the RemoteScan client.

Any comments?

I see no utility in this program.

All scanners that can scan to a file are essentially networked via your networking software.  Any networked user can access that file on the networked drive.  Why would one want to place some paper in a remote scanner and then run to their computer in another location to start scanning?  It is far more efficient to hit the scan button on the scanner walk to your remote computer and pull the scanned documents up on your screen from a file.

Maybe I’m missing something.

Doesn't Windows allow for scanner sharing also for free?  I do prefer the shared drive option, but I believe with Windows sharing you should be able to share the scanner across multiple computers and use it as if it was attached to the second computer.

On a peer to peer Windows network the scanner has to be attached to the pc, so each pc needs their own scanner, printers are completely different.  If you have a 3 in one unit, the printer can be networked but not the scanner portion.

Usually you are asked to select the source and your pc will usually give you the choice of a web cam too if it is connected to the pc.  Windows uses generic twain support for scanning, or it can use drivers you install, but the unit needs to be connected physically to the pc.  The software mentioned though sounds like this is a potential solution though and allow some alternatives.

Thanks for the clarification.   I'd always used it connected to the PC, but had hoped that you could share it across multiple computers.  I guess this is a case where a thin client, remote desktop, LogMeIn or something like that might be useful too.

I tried it and was not satisfied. Unlike printers which can be shared it is not feasible to share scanners in similar fashion. With printer the command is executed and you get the printed copy. Whereas with scanners you have to first move from your desk to feed the scanner and then you go back to the computer to perform the action and then come back to the scanner to retrieve the scanned papers. It gets complicated whent the feeder gets messed up and you have to scan again and again. It affected the workflow and I ended up buying scanners for each desktop in the front office.

RemoteScan is used by thousands of hospitals and medical offices which use Terminal Services or Citrix with their EMR software. With RemoteScan, scanners can be connected directly to a workstation or PC, and ID/Insurance cards and other doucments can then be scanned directly into hosted applications that are running on the remote servers.

RemoteScan does a lot more than the simple twain redirection, including lossless-data compression, user customizable templates for consistent scanner settings across an enterprise, the ability to share a single scanner with other TS/CX users, and it works with virtually every TWAIN or WIA scanner on the market. In addition, our new RemoteScanUniversal product lets you use generic TWAIN scanners with any ISIS software application.

The real advantage of RemoteScan is that we take the pain out of scanner connectivity and have focused our technical efforts on making sure that scanning works with every possible type of TS/CX+scanner+software combination, letting users scan directly into their hosted applications without hassle, regardless what application they are using or what versions or flavor of RDP or ICA (TS,CX, etc.) that are in use in an enterprise. We also stay up-to-date with the constant additions of new versions of TWAIN drivers that get released by scanner manufacturers. The only downside of our product is that it is not free.

Let us know if you have questions or problems.
