I got this new scanner as it is advertised for scanning ID, cards. It works well but too many steps (compared to ScanSnap I used to). Anyone figured how to use it like ScanSnap, load paper, scan, it appears in the file you wanted without need for many clicks. I guess that is the advantage (disadvantage) of TWAIN drive.

Twain is just a way of talking to the scanner. What you are describing is unrelated.
Is there no button on the scanner to start it scanning to a specified directory?

there are buttons on the scanner scan, and scan to. if you press scan it give you choices of programs to scan to. Then when you chose program it gives you a choice for different images quality and sizes, you press scan again on the screen to start scanning. after that you close the choices screen, another message comes on asking if you are done or need to scan more. you press do need to scan more, the image appear as you requested
in ScanSnap, you can adjust your the software, you place the paper in the scanner and press scan. that is it, it shows up in place you already specified. you do not have to do that every time. so, I wonder if there a way to do that with this scanner. I looked at all documents and all through the software and I can not find a way to do that
If the software doesn't allow you to do this, then all is not lost. Since it is a twain scanner, you may be able to download a program to do this, or write your own.
I am not sure if you have the capability to write your own. There are a number of C++ sample programs on www.codeproject.com that you can download. But you need VC++ to compiler to customize it for your needs. There is also www.twain.org that has sample programs in all languages.
if you need, I can send the program for you to try.

According to Fujitsu, you should have the capability to scan directly to a file.

I have a Xerox 262 with what is called, "One Touch." It sounds similar to what you want to do. In my case, it is a driver by Xerox that is initiated with a specific button on my unit. The OT button when configured, will empty all my scans into a folder of my choice. My guess is that you either did not install it or it is installed but you have not set it up. Instructions might not be obvious. They could be a pdf on your original CD or even downloaded into a folder under Program files. To add a scanning application to either the ScanSnap Fi-4110EOX2 or the Fi-5110EOX do the following:
· First install the application per the manufacturer’s instructions.
· Next right click on the ScanSnap icon in the system tray.
· Select setting then click on the application tab, go down to the add remove box and click on it.
· Now click on Add, then the Browse button to select the path to your application (including the executable).
· Next go to the Name of Application box, type in its name and click close.
· Your added application is now ready to be used
Exaclty how One Touch works!

I agree with everybody. I think I need to adjust some settings on the scanner. However, I do not see the scanner icon in system tray. I will try to reinstall the scanner.
Contrarian: I have since moved on to Canon scanners that work immensely better than my ScanSnaps. I own 4 ScanSnaps and have replaced the pick-ups on all of them. I am under the belief that gravity feed scanners like the Fujitisu’s are more likely to have problems with paper feeds than pick up scanners like my Canon. (My business office loves the Canon – they usually scan multiple items that are of different shapes and folded like EOB’s)

Which Canon do you have ?
I am looking for a great scanner with a great paper feed with great software to migrate a doctor from paper to EMR.
I'm looking for a mid-range priced scanner.
This one gets great reviews. Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 ( Not Twain compatable. Is that a big issue? )
Creates only PDF's or OCR.

This scanner has a proprietary (means exclusive) PDF ONLY driver and will scan ONLY with Adobe Acrobat. It produces ONLY PDF files using Adobe Acrobat as the Capture Software.HOWEVER, that said, AFTER the PDF files are created, software programs such as PaperPort or Fujitsu's Rack2-Filer or documentINDEXER+ can be used to manage the PDF files.

PaperPort itself isn't enough to manage the paperflow that well, as well, it doesn't have any workflow features. You could use PaperPort well in combination with Synapse, as Synapse allows you to "shunt" scanned files directly into the patient's "PaperPort Chart" (which is really just a directory named after the patient). For this method to work well, you need to review the paper without access to the patient's chart, ie. read through all the papers, and then tell your staff to file the ones without need for follow up. The ones that you need access to their chart to interpret ... you'll need to view their scanned files (ie. did this patient already have diabetes ?) and moving to a patient's chart can be time consuming. This moving to a patient chart is bypassed by synapse in that it can jump to the patient's chart with one button.
DoQuments could possibly work well for a small doc office.
I was pretty convinced that Lucion's FileCenter was better than PaperPort, mostly because of it's better file previewing and faster networking. I really like having my documents in Synapse though. I can review the patient's chart as I look at their current results/consult, and once I understood that viewing paper is a waste of time and metadata is your way out of flipping through pages ... I knew Synapse was the way to go.

I'd avoid the scan snaps because they don't provide twain drivers - so if your EMR needs to interface with the scanner , you might be up a creek.

I have this same problem with my Fujistsu scanner. I've tried all sorts of programs and couldn't find one that would just use the default settings every time with one click. Kind of a pain, but sometimes good so I can specify one side or double side or switch between the 2. In the end, we're using Adobe Acrobat Professional and scanning from within it to PDF.
I saw this question in one of the threads as far as doing one page color and the next black and white. You can do that with our setup, but you'd have to manually tell the scanner to do it. It doesn't just automatically recognize it.
