Until about 4 years ago, when Nuance released the PowerMic II, Philips completely dominated the speech recognition handheld programmable mouse/microphone market. Phillips answered Nuance’s challenge a couple of years ago with the SpeechMike III but in our opinion, they were unable to challenge Nuance until possibly now. The new Philips Premium SpeechMike LFH 3500/3510 introduces additional programmable buttons, large playback speaker, automatic mute (when you lay the microphone down on a flat surface), integrated pop filter, precision stainless steel laser scanned self lubricating removable trackball, improved signal-to-noise ratio, more sensitive completely redesigned extended-range jar proof microphone element, higher accuracy, polished surface (to reduce unwanted fingertip noises), motion sensor, ergonomically improved and most importantly… SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED noise filtering. Battle of the Desktop Microphones - A New Champion

Headset microphones are a speech recognition staple for most of us because of their high accuracy, affordability and noise cancellation. However headsets can be somewhat uncomfortable to wear over a long period of time and a bit of a hassle for those who have to frequently put them on and off. There's also the time-consuming burden of lining up the microphone element 2 to 3 fingers width away from the corner of your mouth.

The advantage of handheld microphones is that they typically include programmable buttons and mouse controls but they are a bit pricey, tend to be a little weak on noise cancellation and they completely tie up one hand.

Wireless headset microphones have the obvious advantage of being wireless, are often very accurate and noise canceling. However they have the same Achilles' heel as all headset microphones in that you have to put them on and off, line up the microphone element, they're often uncomfortable, pricey and you have the additional burden of having to change the battery once or twice a day.

Desktop microphones are not ideally portable (because of their size), need to be used in a moderately quiet environment (open-door office) and are not wireless but on the upside, they are affordable, you don't have to continually take your headset on and off, position the microphone element or deal with any discomfort because nothing is more comfortable than a microphone you don't have to wear or put on. TableMikes are also great for those with physical limitations. We can testify that once you try a TableMike, it's hard to go back to anything else. We've been testing TableMikes for the past 3 months and as much as we love our wireless Airline 77, we have switched to a TableMike because you just can't beat the comfort and we typically dictate within 3 feet of our computer monitors. We suspect that many of you, after viewing our latest test results, may wind up changing your mind about handheld and headset microphones. Nuance has released NaturallySpeaking Ver. 11.5 - Free to Existing 11.0 Users (but no news on Meical 11.5)

Many of our customers have contacted us about a confusing Ver. 11.5 e-mail message about the release of NaturallySpeaking Ver. 11.5. The confusing part is that the message could easily be misinterpreted as a special offer to upgrade existing 11.0 end users to Premium 11.5 for $100. This is simply not the case. To make matters worse, 1 of our customers nearly made the mistake of purchasing the Premium 11.5 upgrade for $100 when he was already using Pro 11.5 which would have been equivalent to taking 2 steps backward. If you have any questions regarding this upgrade, contact us at (615) 884-4558 or Support@KnowBrainer.com or any Nuance licensed reseller. Here is the scoop:

Rather than just releasing a service release patch, Nuance has decided to go to Ver. 11.5 in order to introduce some new features which include:

1. IE9 support
2. Adjustable sidebar
3. Social media commands (such as the ability to instantly post to Facebook through an IM type of interface)
4. The ability to reverse the damage after utilizing the "choose all" command (Select-&-Say correction) by saying "undo all"
5. Resizable Spell Correction Window
6. Turn your iPad or iPhone (not currently available for Android) into a wireless Wi-Fi microphone via a downloadable Dragon Remote microphone application
7. Additional iTunes command capability with Bonjour
8. "Quote That", "Bracket That", "Parentheses That" will add quotes ect. to any selected text.
9. Nuance has not yet issued a bug list fix but when the list becomes available, it will be posted on the Nuance website and the KnowBrainer Forum.

Please note that existing Ver. 11.0 end users can upgrade to Ver. 11.5 at no charge if you choose to download but we have been informed that the download may not be available for a few weeks and is so large that most end users probably won't be able to transfer the entire installation. For this reason, full backup DVDs will also be made available.

As usual, Nuance has engaged a staggered rollout. DNS Premium 11.0 end users can upgrade to 11.5 immediately. DNS Pro 11.0 end users will be able to upgrade to Pro 11.5 around July 5. DNS Legal 11.5 should be available on the week of July 11 but there is no word on the release of Dragon Medical 11.5 which still appears to be several months away. If you would like to receive an e-mail notification on when and where to obtain Ver. 11.5, as the rollout progresses, you can send an e-mail to Support@KnowBrainer.com and we will send you the “where and when” information as it becomes available. However, please let us know exactly what version and flavor of NaturallySpeaking you are currently using. Example: Preferred 10.1, Premium 11, Pro 9.5 etc... Also note that if you have a previous version of NaturallySpeaking (Ver. 9 or 10) many NaturallySpeaking resellers will be offering introductory upgrade pricing which loosely translates as “1/3 off the usual upgrade price” sale. The new temporary pricing is slated to start on the week of July 4th (only a few days away).

Introducing theBoom Pro-3 - Hi-Fi Stereo Speech Recognition Headphones

Until today, the only professional quality high fidelity stereo speech recognition headphone on the market (that we have been able to find) was theBoom Quite. Other companies such as Logitech and Plantronics market stereo headsets but the sound input and output quality is mediocre at best, making them reasonably suited to gaming and VoIP applications but not optimal for speech recognition.

TheBoom Quiet previously filled this gap and is ideally suited for travelers because it completely covers your ears and produces white noise to block out unwanted sounds; similar to the famous Bose QuietComfort headphones. However, theBoom Quiet’s extra weight and battery requirement isn't everyone's cup of tea. A number of our speech recognition clients have been asking for a lighter battery free system that could be comfortably worn all day while listening to music. After passing that request onto UmeVoice, they came up with theBoom Pro-3 which as of this date, is only available on the KnowBrainer website. Even the manufacturer won't have this microphone on their website for at least 2 more weeks.

Sennheiser DW Office Wireless Microphone/Telephone

Several customers have inquired about the new Sennheiser DW Office wireless over the ear headset. As these were back ordered we put the item on our website at:
with the disclaimer that we had not yet tested this with speech recognition.

We were pretty excited because the specification seemed to indicate that this would work with the phone and connect to the computer via a USB connector.

Upon initial testing we were very excited. Click Here to see the low noise floor, high SNR on the Dragon Audio Setup Wizard when no background noise was present:

We use the linguistic standard, “The Rainbow Passage,” text as this has an even distribution of English phonemes. This first stage of testing made us ecstatic. Accuracy was 100% in Dragon 11 Professional and Windows Speech Recognition. A customer phone call came in while reading and we were easily able to transfer the call. When asked about the clarity of the call, the customer reported it sounded great.

Our ecstasy was short lived. Moderate background noise was played. This is a recording of typical office noise of phones ringing and people talking at a normal level. The Audio Setup Wizard gave failing marks in the first step (the blue bar on the right). On the step with the graph, the yellow noise floor which was almost undetectable with no background noise, now took up 75% of the graph. The SNR reading was 8.

In a nutshell, this microphone will work great with absolutely no noise. If you have been using the Revolabs wireless lapel microphone successfully (it too works well in quiet environments) and you wish to have a combination wireless speech recognition and wireless telephone this will work for you.

USING DRAGON MEDICAL 10.1 WITH A VOICE RECORDER--ANY THOUGHTS ON BEST RECORDER?

I have used dragon medical 10.1 and while I do lots of dictation with a headset mike in real time, for my workflow it would be nice to try to use a voice recorder, dictate and transcribe at end of day or during a break.

I have discovered, however, some issues with this. I did go through and retrain my dragon with a dictation profile and I am currently using a olympus ws-510m unit. Its a nice little unit, but...

1) I am sure the micro is still too sensitive, even on dictation setting, and its not really that adjustable--voice filter helps but not that much...using an external headset mike makes it worse..too many pops and I try not to shout but I am still too loud on the playback I am sure its not helping my accuracy.

2) When you dictate to a file, thats it--you can pause it with a press of the record button, but if you make a mistake you would have to either start over, or just continue recording and dictate the correction. Unlike a tape recorder, its not so simple to stop, rewind and dictate over the mistake. Well, you cant--actually...new file, keeping going or give up.

Does anyone know of any voice records that let you edit more like a tape and thus, can fix the small errors that might pop up? I believe the Olympus ds5000, which is very expensive, is the more professional grade recorder than can do this . Its not a feature which is commonly reported in most reviews of voice records. I have discovered the hard way that the Olympus DM-4 does NOT do this, and even though it has a pretty color lcd screen--its useless to me and getting returned.

Re-Installing Dragon Medical 10.1 After Hard Drive Failure-Looking for Advice

Dear All:

A while back I experienced a hard drive failure on my year old high end HP laptop which I had bought primarily for doing voice dictation with Dragon 10.1 Medical into my EMR when at home. I got the new hard drive put in but when I tried to re-install Dragon my Product Key wasn't accepted. I suspect that my orginal install on the defective hard drive was my last (5th?) allowed with that Product Key and that is the reason things wouldn't work.

The staff of the store where I had purchased the laptop were kind enough to contact Nuance on my behalf and explain the situation in the hope that they would allow me to re-install on the new drive. They were told by Nuance staff that "there shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't have 5 computers running the software presently" which I don't; I have the main one at work and the laptop only.

We took their suggestion and tried to reinstall the Dragon 10.1 disc that I had and the Product Key keeps being rejected.

Any suggestions on what to do about this?

Will I end up having to order a full edition of Dragon 11 Medical when it comes out?

I guess I was thinking if I could get this issue resolved I could just get away with an upgrade since I am only interested in using it on the 2 computers.

Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

Dictation now possible with DNS Premium and Pro 11 in EMR applications

As most of you are aware, Nuance disabled the microphone in NaturallySpeaking Premium 10 - Pro 11 to prevent the use of these applications in the following EMRs. If you're using DNS Premium 10 -Pro 11 and would like the ability to dictate directly into these EMR applications, contact us at Support@KnowBrainer.com and we will put you in touch with our programmer in Great Britain. Note that we are only looking for a couple of volunteers that are already using one of the EMRs on the Nuance no-fly zone. Our programmer will remotely install this application on your computer. We have already tried it on our computers without issue but we do not have an actual EMR application to test it with.

Next Generation Philips Speech Mikes

The venerable Philips SpeechMike series is about to be updated. Expected delivery is September 2010.

Some of the newest features include:

An increased size of dictation function buttons, which creates a more ergonomic form and facilitates fast and convenient thumb control.
A newly positioned trackball with a laser sensor, which allows precise cursor movements and contains an integrated confirmation button for simple control of PC functions and can be used to control volume.
An integrated LED indicator, which shows users the current recording status in different colors so users can avoid errors in post-correction of a voice recording.
Full Integration into Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

The new LFH 3200/3300 series will be available with 4 specific models plus each model will be available with the new SpeechExec Professional software. Our Philips representative explained a company could order, for example, one LFH3205 SpeechMike with push-button operation and SpeechExec professional dictation software and then as many other LFH3200 units without the software. Review of the New Philips SpeechMikes

The venerable Philips SpeechMike series is updated. We received a supply of the new Philips SpeechMike Exec Pro 3205 and Philips SpeechMike Classic 3215. The 3205 is the Pro model with programmable buttons as well as the trackball. The 3215 is called the Classic and has a slide switch for those familiar with the old Dictaphones. The new models are lighter than the previous models. It is also claimed to be more ergonomic although I did not notice much of a difference having used the 3205 all day today.

Using Dragon 11 Professional I have been dictating with different noise levels. What I have noticed is when it is quiet I can actually keep the microphone five or 6 inches from my mouth resting against my chest. When it has gotten noisier, I moved the microphone element closer to my mouth and accuracy does not seem to suffer with typical office noise levels.

I briefly tested the SpeechMike 3205 with WSR, Windows Speech Recognition. It worked best with a very low volume level, 6.

The 3205 and 3215 come with the new SpeechExec ProDictate 6 software. It comes with and requires a USB software license key to install. We did not put this through its paces for believe it will work as easily as previous models for programming the buttons.
