    Any Microphone Recommendations

I recently got Dragon 9.5. With it came a standard headset.

Having used voice-dictation many years ago, I can see that voice dictation has come a very long way. However, the darn things still misunderstand me. I'm sure that it's not all Dragon's fault. I could be part of the problem and the mic could be the other part.

I can't replace me so...I'm willing to get get a new microphone with the hope that my experience will be more fun and with less corrections.

Just as voice-dictation software has improved, I'm sure that mics have too.

Would anyone care to make some suggestions? Don't worry if it don't work for me, I won't blame you Super Angry

I plan to run this on a Windows Vista Notebook. I don't need wireless and hopefully I could get something for under $200 or so.

I really would like to see voice-dictation work well!

    Thanks,

    Ray Chan

    Ray,

The Microphone provided with Dragon is a really good microphone.  I would bet more on the Sound System and Memory/Processor you are working with or your method of dictation.  I would buy a Sound Pod/Card USB to plug into and buy it for each computer you will be plugging into.

Also, did you have any pro training on the use of Dragon, you might be surprissed how much this helps.

We have a lot of practices using it and results do vary, but at least 90% of our physicians are happy with it.

    Hope this helps,

    B

    Re: Any Microphone Recommendations

    Brendon,

Thanks for your reply. This is all new to me. I never heard of a Sound Pod/Card USB. However, I just did a search and found some listed under KnowBrainer Store (I see that they participate on this forum). I may contact them directly and see what they recommend.

Also, I haven't received any "pro training on the use of Dragon". Is this something offered by Dragon or I would imagine some other speech expert. Any suggestions here anyone?

Thanks again. Of course, if anyone have any suggestions for a mic, I'm still open to it. This may be a prejudice on my part, but I can remember some years ago when I was playing with Voice-Type Dictation by IBM the first thing I remember doing was discarding the mic that came with it based on IBM experts at that time and upgrading to a better mic.

Maybe a better mic in combination with the Sound Pod/Card USB, voice-dictation will be as magical I hope it to be. I was real impressed with the demo that I saw on Dragon website -- continuous speech, with great accuracy, and speaking fast -- neato.

To me, speech has a lot of potential, but I'm hopping that I can see it for myself. The time is now Big Smile

    My pleasure,

Knowbrainer will be able to help in many regards.  It is what they do.  I will state that we have many happy Physicians that dictate back in the room with the Buddy Desktop Microphone.  No wires, Mute Button, built in Sound Card.

But it is not a headset and/or so portable if you are using a tablet, but I can highly recommend it for Speach Recognition and fits very well in your budget.  170 including the built in Sound Card.

That being said I am not a expert, I have only tested around 8-10 microphones in the last year.  We recommend this for our busy Cardio and GI docs as well as Radiologists because they dictate in the office and they turn it off when interupted.

In any case take care, we have Dragon OEM (Embedded) version and I can honestly say it is worth the effort.

    Ray,

Since you’re using a notebook computer I would suggest checking out the Buddy Flamingo USB Microphone. It’s small, flexible, and has its own built in soundcard. This mic doesn’t have to be worn on your head so you can avoid the whole cyborg look and comes in at 1/2 of your budget price. The USB Pods Brendon referred to look like this. (  Andrea-pureaudio  ) You can read our review of the Pureaudio and other Dragon NaturallySpeaking peripherals here on this forum.

    Dear KnowBrainer,

    Thanks for your reply.

I looked at the Buddy Flamingo USB mic. It looks strange to me. I'm not sure how this work. Must be my age.

I don't mind wearing something on my head as long as I get better accuracy. Also, I don't see you carrying this Buddy Flamingo on your website. Browsing your website, I see other headsets however.

On your comparison section, I see the Boom "O". What do you think of this in combination with the Andrea USB you referred to? Also, can I pay by check? Address Hermitage, TN? We're in Knoxville Big Smile

    Thanks,

    Ray Chan

You can see the Buddy Flamingo (as well as other microphones) on the eMicrophones web site. Here is a picture of my pet racoon dictating to an IBM ThinkPad with a Buddy Flamingo

As it sounds as if you are a new user of Dragon Speech Recognition, below my name are some new user tips that will help you achieve high accuracy quickly.

    Marty Markoe, eMicrophones, Inc.
    See us at: http://www.emicrophones.com

I have several suggestions to make your transition to Dragon NaturallySpeaking more fruitful:

    1. Read, "Key Steps to High Speech Recognition Accuracy" at:

    http://www.emicrophones.com/docDetails.asp?DocumentID=38

    2. Go to our Links/Articles page at:

    http://www.emicrophones.com/articles/index.asp

Listen to the three sound files on How to Sound and How Not to Sound. Essentially, it may be continuous speech, but it is not conversational speech you need to master. Each word must be enunciated clearly. Speaking in phrases, helps the system because the system is listening not only for the sounds of words but comparing each word to words before and after for context clues.

    3.

    http://www.emicrophones.com/faq_answer.asp?contentID=69

The above link in our Dragon NaturallySpeaking FAQ or frequently asked questions section, tells you the proper way to create a new user profile including when to add your typical documents (not during the training phase).

    4. When you begin to make corrections, make corrections within the context of at least one other word. This will improve the speech profile as relates to your particular style of speaking and will increase the probability that the word will be recognized correctly the next time you speak it.

    Re: Any Microphone Recommendations

You'll find the Buddy Flamingo USB microphone under the previous link on our website. Comparing the Buddy Flamingo to the theBoom “O” microphone is a bit like comparing apples to oranges but our personal preference would be to combine theBoom "O" with any USB Pod external soundcard.

Note that when you purchase Speech Recognition Microphones, Digital Recorders and NaturallySpeaking software/utilities from Nuance Gold Licensed vendors you typically gain you an extra layer of Nuance Certified tech support while paying a lower price. This can be especially important when you are a new user of NaturallySpeaking. Visit us at http://www.TheMicrophoneStore.com or http://www.TheVoiceRecognitionStore.com

We have no problem with personal checks but if you don't want to wait for your check to clear, you will need to secure it with a credit card. We also offer a customer satisfaction no restock fee 30 day guarantee.
