Dear All:

Got the EMail below from Nuance. My EMR still uses XP because the Vendor didn't trust Vista. Has anyone used this new product? Does Dragon 10 work better with Vista ?

Thanks

I've only got one user that I know of using Vista 64 bit vs Vista 32 bit.

For most people .. they will be staying with 32 bit for a long time yet.

Many new computer systems, desktop as well as notebooks, come with Vista 64 bit installed. There is also a lot of major software now being rewritten to take advantage of 64-bit operating systems. Where you can only address 4 GB of RAM now with a 32-bit system you can address up to 128 GB of RAM with a 64-bit system. For someone whose computer runs in a lot of programs will notice a marked improvement in performance. If you are only using two or three software programs, you may not notice anything.

Nearly everything runs faster in Windows 64-bit OS including most 32-bit programs and by the end of May, all DNS 10 software, including Medical 10.1, will be 64-bit. We're not saying that you won't run into a few snafu's such as with some utilities but most major programs run better and we've just put in our order for a new i7 quad core with solid-state hard drives, 12 GB of RAM, dual NVIDIA GTX 295 video cards, dual operating systems (Windows Vista Ultimate & Windows 7) and every other creature comfort we could think of to blow the grandkids inheritance on Wink

This is only true if you have a very new computer (at least a Core2Duo) with at least 4 GB of RAM and run many programs. We realize Knowbrainer says he will soon have the speediest modern computer. However, most hospitals, medical practices and private physicians have older computers which will not see any advantage in upgrading to a 64-bit operating system. Also, if you're just running a couple of basic programs like Dragon NaturallySpeaking and an EMR which in our experience take up less than a gigabyte of RAM, you're not going to see any advantage.

I am running Dragon Preferred 9.5 on Vista, and it works great!

No issues at all.

As of right now, there are not that many apps that take advantage of 64bit.

On the other hand, there are MANY MANY apps that don't work well in 64bit.

The Pain/Gain ratio is way too high for 64 bit unless you have a special app that warrants it.

IMO, stick with Dragon 9.5 Preferred (free upgrade when you purchase 9.0) , and let others be part of the bleeding edge debugging the 64 bit versions.

Added bonus:  Saves $1000+ dollars, and works with any EMR, unlike the crippled version 10.

NaturallySpeaking 10 is no longer bleeding edge. It was released 9 months ago, has undergone a service release patch and Nuance just released Preferred 10.1 a few weeks ago and Pro 10.1 last week. Keep in mind that Ver. 9.5 isn't really 9.5 in terms of only being a half a version away from Ver. 10. Nuance finally learned their lesson with the last release. The only difference between Ver. 9.5 and Ver. 9.1 is Vista and Office 2007 support. In reality, Ver. 9.5 was more equivalent to Ver. 9.2 but the advertising staff got carried away. We understand that you're staying with Ver. 9 but Ver. 10 has about 30 major advantages. Even if you completely discount the higher accuracy, Ver. 10 has eliminated the 3 to 4 second Results Box hang time delay. When you combine that with the new formatting improvements (you no longer have to remove extra spacing or capitalize words that DNS missed) you're looking at a 20 to 25% boost in efficiency and if your time is valuable, the cost of upgrading could pay for itself within a few days at most. Just food for thought...

We are currently running Pro 10.1 on a new i7 3.2 GHz quad core Vista Ultimate 64-bit operating system, 12 Gb of RAM, Intel 160 Gb solid-state hard drive with dual NVIDIA GTX 295 video cards. We also installed Vista ultimate 32-bit on a 2nd drive to compare and everything really does move out a little faster on the 64-bit operating system but as Martin stated, you won't notice that much difference unless you're a power user. We had no choice because our old computer died and we typically use 4 Gb of RAM in our work.

Like Reddy, I too have stuck with DNS Preferred 9.5. I'm not a "power user" and the few extra add-ins seen in DNS 10 seems like just fluff. The inability of DNS 10 to work with most EMRs is a manipulation of the consumer base that is enough of a worrisome development that I will boycott any software that uses this concept as long as I can, even though I am lucky enough to have my own EMR that I programmed myself and wouldn't have to go through that hassle.

We use Dragon 9.5 with Vista and it works great. We are on 32 bit.

I find it interesting that I continue to get upgrade offers for Dragon Preferred 10 with the BIG NEWS that it is 64 bit compatible.

The number of 64 bit users is really pretty small at this point.

What Nuance FAILS TO MENTION in its emails to me is that 10.0 Preferred is EMR crippled. If this isn't a bait and switch, I don't know what is.

IMO, if you use an EMR, stick with Dragon 9.5 Preferred.

And let some other 'pioneer' fight the 64 bit battles until more software is compatible.

It's not personal. Everyone receives an offer to upgrade to DNS Preferred 10; even existing DNS Preferred, Professional and Medical 10 users receive this offer but Nuance has no way of knowing that you're using EMR software. It's simply a nonintelligent robotic response and we agree that would be more helpful if they would include additional information to qualify their upgrade offers. Unfortunately, it's much less expensive to simply spam everyone who registered a Nuance or ScanSoft product.

Lunis, the BS detector is screaming now.

With all the little fine prints included in most advertising, this is a HUGE omission.

This is about the clearest BAIT AND SWITCH we've seen a quite a while.

Clearly Nuance is not proud of the fact that they crippled version 10. Why not give fair notice?  How many electrons would be inconvenienced when their e-mails go out promoting the new version 10 Preferred?

I've saved all their emails from day one. NONE of them mention the EMR restriction.

BAIT and SWITCH.

IMO, it's a crime.

For those unhappy with Dragon  version 10 like I am, here is a method to use Dragon 9 with Windows 7 64-bit.

How to: Install Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 on Windows 7 64-bit

http://www.start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3268&Itemid=129

An excerpt:

"Nuance has officially announced that they will now support Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 on on a 64-bit operating system, but I have successfully installed Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 on Windows this to 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit. Installation process for this versus Windows 7 for Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 is virtually identical.

There’s nothing dangerous about this process. The installation files from Dragon NaturallySpeaking are copied to the local hard drive, the installation MSI file is modified to root remove the launch conditions that prohibit installation onto a 64-bit operating system. The rest of the installation is pretty much stock from Nuance."

I recently purchased a refurbished (looked brand new to me) HP Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66 Ghz  + 6 GB RAM for $649.00 at buy .com.

I am very, very, happy. This thing just flies! For $649? I am totally amazed.

Once again, I am unexpextedly paying Nuance more than the cost of my computer upgrade to upgrade Dragon again.

That is going to stop.

So .. the point is that x64 Windows 7 computers will be flooding the market before the end of the year.

You DOS users can't hold out much longer!

If you have the Nuance Medical, (the Platinum edition I think it's called) , you can get the  Nuance (or Dragon, whatever) Software Maintenance for $288 per year.  Covers all my upgrades, plus great 24x7 tech support from Nuance.  I don't think $288 per year is unreasonable for that.

I pay eClinicalWorks $2400 a year for the same "privilege"  IE the Software Maitenence and tech support for my EMR software, and when I write THAT check out the Nuance check seems like a bargain by comparision.

I know there may be cheaper speech recognition options, and cheaper and less complicated EMR options, but these products work well for me and I'm happy!

FWIW, I personally find the Dragon Medical program to be easy to use and quite functional.  So is the eClinicalWorks EMR.  (Well, at least it's very functional, I have to say that eClinicalWorks takes quite a while to learn to use it properly, since it has so many features and so much possible customization.  - eClinicalWorks specifies 5 days of training, and that barely even scatches the surface of the product).

Perfect Option, you have the 'Perfect' name!

It is great that you have the Option to choose to spend thousands extra for the full Medical version, plus hundreds more for support.

But wait, is it an Option?

Not anymore, it is forced upon us. Rammed down our throats.

We have no Option to choose between the Medical version and the Preferred version anymore, if you want to use an EMR.

Perhaps you could change your name to 'Perfect Monopolistic Money Grab from Doctors Only'.

Or 'No Option at All'.

IMO, when referring to Dragon 10.0, I don't see using the terms 'Perfect' or 'Option' in the same sentence.

BTW, Preferred 9.5 works great for me.

And still available on eBay.

As far as any future purchases from Nuance, I am opting out.
