SILVER SPRING, Md., June 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers that Magic Power Coffee, an instant coffee product marketed as a dietary supplement for sexual enhancement, contains an active drug ingredient that can dangerously lower blood pressure.

Consumers who have Magic Power Coffee should stop using it immediately. Sexual enhancement products that claim to work as well as prescription products are likely to expose consumers to unpredictable risks and the potential for injury or even death.

In the case of Magic Power Coffee, the FDA collected and analyzed the product and determined that the product contains hydroxythiohomosildenafil. This is a chemical similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra. Hydroxythiohomosildenafil, like sildenafil, may interact with prescription drugs known as nitrates, including nitroglycerin, and cause dangerously low blood pressure. Consumers and health care professionals should be aware of this problem and the health hazard it presents.

When blood pressure drops suddenly, the brain is deprived of an adequate blood supply, which can lead to dizziness or lightheadedness.

"Because this product is an instant coffee labeled as an 'all natural dietary supplement,' consumers may assume it is harmless and poses no health risk," said Deborah M. Autor, director of FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Office of Compliance. "In fact, Magic Power Coffee can cause serious harm."

Pfizer Suing Teva To Block Generic Version of Viagra Until 2019 Instead of 2012 Expiration Date – Viva Teva

The FDA has given Teva tentative approval to begin selling a generic version in 2012. Teva states the patent for 2019 is invalid and a generic product will not .png?imgmax=800" width="153" height="59" alt="" />infringe. This goes back to 2004 when Teva notified Pfizer of their intention. Pfizer on the other hand didn’t have such good luck in the US Trademark Office and denied the copyright saying it resembled the active ingredient in “Horny Goat Weed”. What Does Viagra Cost?

Pfizer Inc. has sued generic maker Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd. in federal court to block a copycat version of its Viagra erectile-dysfunction drug from being sold in the U.S. until 2019.

Israel-based Teva has tentative approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to sell a generic of the drug upon the March 2012 expiration of its primary patent, covering its composition, according to the suit. Viagra, which brought $1.9 billion in world-wide sales for Pfizer in 2009, is also covered by patent expiring in October 2019 that covers its use in erectile dysfunction.

Method-of-use patents allow companies to patent a new use for an already covered compound, but they often aren't considered as strong as an original composition-of-matter patent

Here’s some more healthcare money being spent on legal suits over ED drugs. You know if pharma keeps up with all these extensive legal battles it might begin to start depleting some profits and of course it keeps the cost up there for us. An appeals board of the patent agency, in a February 12 decision, upheld an earlier finding that an element of the Viagra patent did not represent a new invention.

The claims came under contention as part of a patent infringement lawsuit Pfizer filed against Eli Lilly and Co, which makes the rival drug Cialis.

The board of patent appeals said in a ruling posted on its website on Tuesday that a chemical ingredient of Yin Yang Huo, which is used to treat impotence and sometimes sold as an alleged aphrodisiac, is similar to the enzyme inhibitor found in Viagra.

"The decision has no effect on Pfizer's patent claims relating to Viagra," Pfizer spokesman Chris Loder said.
